Saint Llúcia’s Fair, 200 years of History

Saint Llucia’s Fair has already more than 200 years old of history and it’s hold each December at the foot of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

The first reference of this Christmas market appears in 1786, although it is believed that it began before. During the XVII-XIX centuries there were also three other fairs near the Cathedral during St. Thomas’day – December 21: in the Pi square and also in Sant Felip Neri square. Time after they began growing until they came together.

This Christmas market has nothing to envy from any other European ones. Saint Lucia has become a tradition prior to Christmas time preparations due it is the place where many Catalans decide to buy all the Christmas decoration for the house.

The fair is divided into 4 thematic spaces:

Births and figures of births and the most original figures for the crib.

Vegetation, such as moss, natural trees, cork, … and cagatiós! From the most traditional to the more modern.

Zambombas

Crafts of all kinds, for home, for children, …

These little shops, which were assembled and disassembling daily years ago, belonged to families who had inherited from generation to generation, keeping their presence at the fair. Currently, we do not know if the tradition continues, what we do know, however, is that there is no Christmas without Saint Llucia’s Fair!

It is open daily from 10.30 to 20.30 on weekdays and from 10.30 to 21.30 in public holidays and the day before. Hurry! There is only one week left until the 23 of December, the last day!
