Costa Maresme

Proceeding along the northern coastline of Barcelona, between the sea and mountains, we reach Maresme county, which stretches along more than 50 kilometres of beautiful coast between Montgat and Malgrat de Mar, without forgetting the magnificent interior with the Parc del Montnegre and the mountainous Corredor (the Serralada Litoral and the Serralada de Marina).

This area was already a usual destination of the Catalan bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to which Maresme county retains a substantial Modernist heritage. In Mataró, for example, we find the first work planned by Antoni Gaudí, and in various municipalities we can follow Modernist architecture routes, such as the Lluís Domènech i Montaner House-Museum in Canet de Mar and the Puig i Cadafalch Route in Mataró and Argentona, amongst others.

The Maresme has been a major source of inspiration for culture, as birthplace or place of artistic creation for poets, writers, architects and sculptors. Arenys de Mar became the mythical world of Sinera thanks to the fabulous work of the poet Salvador Espriu. When visiting the cemetery, we should not miss the chance to enjoy the magnificent marble sculptures by Josep Llimona. In Premià de Dalt we find “Casa Blatjot”, the posthumous work of the architect Josep Lluís Sert, where Picasso and Miró, among other illustrious figures, spent delightful evenings. And in all the municipalities there are also all kinds of museums, dedicated to lacework, pharmacies, drinking pitchers, etc.

Its cuisine is also one of the most notable features of Maresme county, with produce of the sea and the land: wines of the Alella appellation, the historical “Restaurant Hispània” in Arenys de Mar and the Michelin 3-star “Restaurant St. Pau” run by Carme Ruscalleda in St. Pol de Mar, as well as restaurant Relais & Chateux.

In the Maresme we can engage in all types of water sports at fantastic sailing clubs lying all along the coastline. It is also an ideal spot for players of golf, Pitch&Put and tennis, as well as for runners, cyclists and anybody who enjoys the sea and mountains.

The Maresme has very good schools and colleges: Mataró has the Tecnocampus and the Escola Universitària Politècnica; in Alella we find the trilingual Hamelin Internacional Laie school, the Betlem school in Premià de Dalt, among many others.

As a reference, Mataró is 30 minutes away from Barcelona, 40 minutes from El Prat airport, 45 minutes from Girona, 15 minutes from La Roca Village and 10 minutes from Mataró Hospital.
